Sarah Oakley began dancing in California. She graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a dual BFA in Dance Choreography and Dance Performance. She performed as a member of Donald McKayle's Etude Ensemble and was awarded excellence in choreography and campus wide honors for her thesis project. Sarah then performed in Houston, Texas with Ad Deum II Dance Company (serving as rehearsal director and choreographer), Revolve Dance Company, and LEON Contemporary Dance Company. She taught for Houston Ballet Academy and Education Outreach and The Alley Theatre Conservatory, among many others. She also trained in the National Dance Institute pedagogy. Sarah spent some time performing and teaching in Seattle before moving to London to study at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, earning her MA in Dance Performance (with Distinction) as a member of Transitions Dance Company. There, Sarah started her research into understanding teaching as a creative process by examining the relationship between professional experience and pedagogical training. She is ecstatic to be in Seattle once again and is honored to be a part of the DEAW board.
